How appropos to have both Matt and Natasha in the same gallery entry considering their long history together off and on. Stats: 4th and 5th jobs over Casey, my fifth DD, my 2nd BW, and my 2nd and 3rd commissions for client Jason Norek. I did the Widow one first and Jason said to ink it on the original pencil sketch. I used brush, Pitt brush marker, micron markers, and drybrush. I finished the 11X17 on 2-ply board inks on 9/7/11. I did ‘ol hornhead next and Jason had me do that one on blueline. To me this one seemed inspired by the work of Frank Miller, John Romita, Jr. and Lee Weeks. I used all of the above tools as well as finger smudges in b&w, spatter in b&w, and white drybrush.
Jason asked me to add a background to the empty space in the original so after some thought I decided to pull out my ink compass and add concentric circles to give him his radar sense FX like DD artists used to (I don’t know if they still do;-)) I told Jason that while I originally intended to add some sort of shading in the background via cross-hatching or spatter or some such, that this would probably be too busy and that the image ‘breathes’ better this way…and I didn’t want to hinder Casey’s powerful composition. He agreed. I completed the 11X17 job on 2-ply Kubert board on 9/9/11. Color artist Blake Wilkie turned in the color file on 10/8/11.
