In 1997 Tom Grindberg was looking for a new inker for Marvel’s STAR TREK: DS9 title that he had been pencilling. Tom had been happy with some earlier Marvel work I’d done with him so he got the editor’s approval and they sent me pencil & inked photocopies of Tom’s work from ST:DS9 #6. From that package I inked 3 pages, mostly in brush, and sent them in and received Marvel and Paramount’s approval to come aboard as ink artist. Unlike the other 2 sample jobs posted on this page where I had a preferable medium to ink on in each case (blueline for THUNDERBOLTS and, even better, actual boards of pencils for the AVENGERS) I had to ink these on clear tracing vellum. This is probably the most common way to ink over photocopies but I’m not fond of the bubbling and shifting of paper. But at least the clarity is a bit better than working on boards over a lightbox, but I digress. Anyway, I inked issues 8, 9 and then 12. And that was it. For reasons I prefer not to get into Tom was soon off the book and I, his his recent inker, was sent packing with him. Easy come, easy go as they say.
