After a small absence my client Jeff sent me 3 more Namor commissions to ink. This one, my 14th for him and 4th over Paul Ryan, consists of Jeff’s wish list Fantastic Four team members of Namor, Invisible Woman, Namorita and She-Hulk. What I found cool was that much of the piece has a very Gil Kane feel to it. I inked this 11X17 job with the standard brush, Pitt brush marker and regular markers. It was completed on 11/18/2004.
Below that was a job that I did prior to the FF one. Also by Paul (my 3rd) he did this sketch for my client Jay at a store signing 10 years ago (circa 1994). Paul had done the Invisible Girl sketch seen previously in my gallery 10 years ago as well at the same venue for Jay’s business partner and brother Steve who both run Rubber Chicken Comics, which happens to be my primary retail store. In this Silver Surfer piece I wanted to add a transition to the sky in the background so that the upper half of the art became black space with some stars. I’m not sure if I would’ve used zip, spatter drybrush or crayon for the transition. While this would have really popped Norrin Radd from the art and allow me to play up on his metallic surface shines, warp effect and energy blast Jay preferred that I didn’t because it would have meant that Paul’s message would’ve been either erased or left as this awkward-looking white message space in the blackened space section. I agreed with him and didn’t bother (but I erased the message in Photoshop in the inked version which I make a general practice of since signatures and messages can be distracting when viewing the inked art. This 11X14 commission was inked with the same tools as the job above it but I spattered a bit of white paint on the energy blast. It was completed on 11/3/2004.
