It was time for the Charlotte, NC Heroes Con again so Craig & I agreed to collaborate on the image for the theme for the 2003 program book and, understandably, this year it was Hulk. Craig decided to render him in a retro Kirby style and after flipping through early Hulk issues he generally based this Hulk @ INCREDIBLE HULK v1 # 4 & 5. At the last minute he added in floating heads of Betty, Rick and General ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross to the charging pose which added to the nostalgic elements; it had coincidentally been one of my suggestions to drop some friends or foes into the image during our initial discussion. I finished the art using mostly brush, a little bit of marker and a Hunt 102 quill for the flash lines. I played up the Kirby stylings although it probably didn’t quite match his style from 1963 since Jack didn’t use much in the area of his squiggly lines in the early Marvel Silver-age but he would in a few more years to follow. Hulk was finished 5/31/03. Puny humans beware!
UPDATE: 4/1/04- I’ve been slowly learning how to handle digital coloring with Photoshop on my desktop computer (with lotsa help from Craig). The color image on this page is my first newbie effort and I will add some more color images to upcoming entries in this gallery
