pencils by Chad Spilker
I believe that this is my 2nd Mary Marvel
commission but it's certainly my first work
over Chad and my 15th job for Mr. Rankins.
I was asked to make minor adjustments to
the sketch and I tweaked a few things of my
own along the way. I used a brush and
markers and I used a Pitt brush marker to
get the mono-weight, thick contour lines to
capture the intended Adam Hughes-style.
The client wanted a background added to
the image but not the lightning motif often
used with Marvel Family commissions. I
tacked on an off-center vertical panel to
balance the composition and added a star
scene by spattering with white paint. I left
a halo around the figure to further simulate
the Hughes approach. This 11 X 17 image
was completed on 10/2/06.
