We Made the Llst of Marvel’s TOP TEN BLACK PANTHER Stories!

The article was posted on Bleeding Cool and the video countdown resides there and on YouTube from July 15.  My comments on Facebook were:

“(We’re proud) to have worked on one story on this Marvel TOP TEN BLACK PANTHER STORIES list with #5 “Killmonger’s Rage” which was our (Priest/Sal Velluto/Almond) longest epic at like a dozen chapters, but I’m surprised not to see “Sturm Und Drang: A Story of Love & War” (BP#26-29) make the l
ist as many felt that that was opus of our run. It included some of the major monarchs of the Marvel Universe, T’Challa’s nemesis Klaw, and it was us that reunited Ororo/Storm back with T’Challa after Claremont introduced them as kids in MTU#100 (which possibly should also be included) decades earlier and influenced Hudlin to later get them hitched (on the list).”

Checkpoint!

2016: it’s been a year of announced deaths in record levels.  My health’s been better.  Lots of drama. Time has seemingly sped up leaving me no time to get anything done.  Not a fan.

I am still doing simultaneous work for Kingstone Media and Ravesnake Comics but I’m in-between things at the moment.  I did finally wrap up all old commissions for a regular client…clean slate!  And it feels GREAT! I hope to be able to add three new entries to my commission gallery before long.

I visited the Kubert School for the 1st time to represent the Inkwell Awards w/ Ms. Inkwell and to present the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund to a talented student in need, Matthew Neumann. I loved it!  Also for the Inkwells, I am trying to prepare for the awards ceremony at Heroes Con and I have so much to do! And that clock is mocking me!

My pal Sal Velluto recently had cancer surgery and mutual chum Mike Lovins has created a fundraiser to help Sal and his family with paying bills from his inability to work. You can find out more here!  If you have been entertained over the years by Sal’s work please consider helping him get back on his feet and produce more magic. I don’t want to collect sick friends.

I cancelled plans for signing on Free Comic Book Day due to the recent craziness but I’ll be attending Albany Con May 5 and and Heroes Con June 17-19.  I hope to see any of you there or the shows that follow them (see Public Appearances above). I’ll be the frazzled and tired looking guy staring at my watch.  Is it just me?!

My Present Workload, pt. 2

Since my last update (in part 1) about inking Richard Bonk for two short stories I have been reunited with my oft-partner Sal Velluto on a story at Kingstone Media.  This is our first collaboration (outside of commissions) in 6 years since some Phantom ‘ghost’ (uncredited) inkwork for Egmont Comics. After that I inked a few pages over Paul Abrams who I’ve never inked before except on a commission and then I was reunited with Kyle Hotz for nine pages to a story to help out inker Jason Moore. (Much thanks to Enrique (Zeke) Savory Jr. for his ink assistance on these jobs.)  Kyle and I last worked together on Marvel’s Heroes for Hire for 3 issues and a Spider-Island spin-off issue five years ago. There are a few more pages from Kyle for another story coming my way in a few days. I hope to catch up on old commission work this week while in-between gigs.

A Career Status Assessment

A LOVE/HATE OBSERVATION I MADE ON FACEBOOK TODAY: I’ve been continuously working the past few years on either assignments or commissions but they’ve not been mainstream assignments so to the comics community my status is probably MIA or ‘dead’;-)  But thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe my earlier work has been making the rounds in overdrive since this year and doesn’t seem to be slowing down (Black Panther, Warlock, Thanos, Infinity or Starlin-related, Guardians, etc.). The Complete Priest Black Panther vol. 3 is solicited for April release and it collects the end of my run with Sal. And now it looks like they’re collecting the Warlock and the Infinity Watch series from start to finish starting with Infinity Watch vol. 1 tpb solicited for release in March. On one hand I’m proud of the Panther work and I’m thrilled to see my career flash before my eyes (maybe I AM dead <g>) and the reprint fees are always much-appreciated but, being my earliest work, it’s rough on these old eyes to see the raw mess that was my inking then. Thankfully, I got better;-)

My Present Workload

Speaking of those ‘non-mainstream assignments’, since my last update below (“Two Bob Bits”) for those ‘fans of faith’ who may be interested:  I have inked two stories so far for Kingstone Comics for their ‘Kingstone Bible’, both over the pencils of Richard Bonk- ‘Amos’ and ‘Habakkuk’. And I will be getting more work coming up over some SURPRISE pencil artists. I’m also doing a short ‘Jittery Tales’ story for my former boss at Ravesnake Comics. Between these gigs, Inkwell Awards obligations and the holidays, I’m glad I don’t have any shows to attend for the immediate future! So as the note says in my newsflash above, sorry, my commissions list is closed. But 2016 is looking brighter;-)

Two Bob Bits! (No Bevy this time around)

*First off, if you live in the New England area and plan to

attend the Rhode Island Comic Con on November 6-8 I will again be in artists alley

alongside my Inkwell Awards. I’ll have copies for sale of the first edition to The Black

Panther by Christopher Priest: The Complete Collection but regrettably the second

edition ships the following week and I don’t plan to attend another show in quite some

time. I should have at least one copy of The Infinity War Aftermath tpb, too.

*Since my last work for Ravesnake Comics ended in

the spring I’ve been mostly doing commissions. Now it looks like I’ll be starting work

for Kingstone Comics this coming week. The publish Christian-based and young adult

adventure comics and graphic novels. They hope to become the ‘Marvel’ of the faith

market. More on the specifics to come. If I notice a consistent increase in work

frequency I’ll mention that the commission list is closed for the immediate future.

Between these developments and a tirade of trades shipping soon this should be an

interesting fall/winter.

A Bevy of Bob Bits

*HARTFORD CON: The dates were wrong and an error on my part.  Instead of September 5-6 the Inkwells and myself will be there when it runs September 19-20 so please adjust your calendars and I hope to see you there!

*MAKE MINE BOB ALMOND: Sorry, for those who might’ve been interested I didn’t promote this in advance but I’ll be sure to next time. The Make Mine Marvel Facebook group (also this link) scheduled me for a live online FB interview yesterday August 25 at 8pm EST.  It went really well and I was typing non-stop for two and a half hours until it slowed down (not stopped) and I politely pulled out of the fandom festivities!  I  enjoyed the event and queestions and there’s talk of me returning in the future. I will keep you posted here. For realz this time;-)

*BLACK PANTHER BY CHRISTOPHER PRIEST: THE COMPLETE COLLECTION (UPDATE): This week I submitted my revised Intro from the Panini Comics reprint in 2003 to the Marvel Collections Dept editorial office (this time to be printed in English instead  of French) as well as an assortment of image files to be considered as bonus features for the 2nd (shipping in 11/11/15 w/ issues 18-35) and 3rd (due the first quarter of 2016 w/ issues 36-49) volumes. Tentatively, the front cover of the third collection will be from BP#48 (painted by Jason Nagasawa) and the back cover will be the Velluto/Almond cover that was originally rejected for our final issue (#49) and later commissioned to completion and used on the 2nd Panini collection front cover. For those interested in reading a recent three part Priest interview you can go herehere, and then here.

That’s it for now!  Until next time, inkslingers!

A couple of cool, random Bob Almond-related images

From my Facebook wall, my post “Interesting to see that actor Michael Rooker who played Yondu in the Guardians film used this image that Kevin West and I worked on for his banner for convention appearances! It was a pin-up from the one of two GotG annuals that Kevin and I collaborated on circa 1993-94, our first times teamed together. Photo by David Craig.”

And also from my Facebook, photo taken by my regular commission client Christophe (Kriss) Palma and his statement “Bob Almond is well represented on my wall.”  All but the 2nd from the left was inked by me.  This also does not include smaller commissions like a Yellowjacket by Mike McKone or Punisher commissions by Rene Micheletti and by Thomas Frisano.

PLEASE VOTE IN THE 2015 INKWELL AWARDS!

The annual ballot is now live at the website homepage of Inkwell Awards.  Voting will run from May 1 – May 15 so please support your favorite ink artists! For more info go here.

I’ll be at the ComiCONN @ the Mohegan Sun!

I’ll be attending the Connecticut Comiconn at Mohegan Sun for the first time this year (August 14-16) as they’ll be supporting the non-profit Inkwell Awards who will be set up there along with our spokesmodel Ms. Inkwells doing meet & greets @ the Mohegan Sun Convention Center in Uncasville, CT.

(Yes, I’ll be attending the 犀利士
scon/guests/”>Heroes Con earlier June 19-21 but they haven’t added me/us to the list yet at their website.)
